ThereвЂ™s still a large ensemble cast of one-dimensional cardboard cutouts, the dialogue still hammers everything home with the subtlety of a sledgehammer, and thereвЂ™s still RolandвЂ™s half-hearted message of global peace and working together while still having America saving the day.В What few new ideas that the film does have are all stolen from better movies. In the first film, the mothership was a quarter of the size of the moon вЂ“ NOW ITвЂ™S 3000 MILES ACROSS! In the first film, the aliens blew up famous monuments вЂ“ NOW THEY DROP BUILDINGSВ ONTO LONDON AND FLOOD THE USвЂ™S EAST COAST! The first film had Bill PullmanвЂ™s President of the United States as a main character вЂ“ NOW THERE ARE THREE PRESIDENTS!!! В (PullmanвЂ™sВ technically an ex-president, but everyone still calls him Mr President anyway).ДespiteВ those cosmetic tweaks, the film is essentially the same as its predecessor.
